Weekend recap: Rampage earn sweep of rival Stars

CEDAR PARK – The San Antonio Rampage closed out the weekend by defeating the Texas Stars (22-24-5) in back-to-back games at the H-E-B Center on Friday and Saturday night.

In case you missed it, here’s a recap of the weekend’s games:

Friday: Rampage 3, Texas 2 (SO)

The Rampage opened the weekend with their first shootout win of the season, downing Texas 3-2 in the skills competition.


Mitch Reinke opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when he buried a rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Rhett Gardner evened the score at one goal apiece when he slid the puck past San Antonio netminder Adam Wilcox at 8:33.

San Antonio took the 2-1 lead off Tanner Kaspick’s fifth goal of the season when he let go a backhand shot at 13:01 for the lone goal of the second period. The Stars forced overtime while on a 6-on-4 chance after pulling the goaltender. Michael Mersch redirected a shot past Wilcox to make it 2-2 after 60 minutes.

Nathan Walker scored the lone goal of the shootout for San Antonio’s first shootout win of the season and their second win earned beyond regulation.

Saturday: Rampage 2, Texas 0

The Rampage closed the weekend with a 2-0 shutout win over the Stars. Ville Husso stopped all 28 shots in the win for the ninth shutout of his AHL career and his eighth with the Rampage.

After two scoreless periods, the Rampage finally opened the scoring in the final frame. Ryan Olsen flipped home a rebound to put the visitors up a goal. Alexey Toropchenko got the puck in the high slot for a wrist shot, making it 2-0 Rampage.

San Antonio picked up their third win in the past four games and are now 7-0-1 this season against the Stars.

UP NEXT:

The Rampage are now 19-20-12 (50 points) on the season and will return to the ice on Friday to face the Rockford IceHogs (25-25-3) to kick off another big weekend.
