UTSA opens Thanksgiving Classic with home loss to NIU Huskies

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Roadrunners opened up their traditional Thanksgiving Classic with a 69-55 loss to the NIU Huskies at the Convocation Center on Friday night.

The loss kicked off the first of two games for the Roadrunners as part of their Thanksgiving Classic. The defeat was the fourth straight for UTSA, who have not won since their season opener.

NIU (4-1) opened the game strong, taking a 15-2 lead. The deficit would prove too much for UTSA despite them going on an 8-1 run in the second quarter, led by sophomore Tija Hawkins. The Huskies never trailed as they took a 22-point lead over the final two quarters, cruising to victory.

The Roadrunners were led by Hawkins’ 13 points, while Crystal Chidomere added 12 in the loss. UTSA committed 21 turnovers in the game, which saw them dig themselves a deeper hole when they had already cut the deficit down to 12.

Up next: The UTSA Roadrunners are now 1-4 on the season and will return to the court on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to wrap up the classic against North Dakota.
