SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Roadrunners began a new era of women’s college basketball, opening the 2017-18 season with a dominate 97-47 victory over Sul Ross State at the Convocation Center on Friday night.

The victory began a new era for UTSA women’s basketball as Kristen Holt begins her first season as Head Coach after serving as the program’s associate head coach for the past four seasons.

UTSA was led by sophomore forwards Marie Benson and Tija Hawkins. Benson finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Hawkins added 17. The Roadrunners blew the game open after halftime as they outscored the Lobos 25-9 in the third quarter, leaving no doubt about who would come out on top.

Taylor Gass led Sul State (0-1) with 21 points in a losing effort and Angalyn Latin added 16.

The Roadrunners defense started the season strong as they held Sul State to 47 points and 28 percent shooting for the game.

Up next: UTSA is now 1-0 on the season and will return to the court on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Tempe for their first road contest against Arizona State at 3 p.m.
