USL San Antonio has signed defender Stephen McCarthy to a contract for the upcoming 2016 season, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.
“Stephen is a tall center-back who I have worked with previously,” said Head Coach Darren Powell. “In addition to being a great defender, his leadership skills will be great for our new club.”
McCarthy spent last season with Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) of the Finnish first division. The 27-year-old was originally drafted by the New England Revolution in the MLS SuperDraft in 2011, where he tallied two goals through 69 matches.
He split his college career with both Santa Clara University and the University of North Carolina.
“I am excited to come to Texas to play in my home state,” said McCarthy. “San Antonio is an amazing city and I am ready to push myself and the team to do great things on the field this season.”
USL San Antonio will announce their crest, team name, and colors tomorrow night in an event at the AT&T Center. The team will hit the pitch on April 2 for their first game in franchise history against the Seattle Sounders 2 on the road.
