USL San Antonio has signed midfielder Carlos Alvarez to a contract for the upcoming 2016 United Soccer Leagues season, the team announced on Tuesday morning.

“Carlos is a player I’ve admired and respected for a long time,” said USL San Antonio coach Darren Powell. “He is a creative attacking player that’s looking for a good run of games, and we envision him being a big part of our roster this season.”

The 25-year-old was the second overall pick the 2013 MLS SuperDraft and spent his time with the Colorado Rapids, where he tallied two goals and four assists in 22 matches.

Alvarez was originally selected by Chivas USA before being traded to Colorado in July of 2014. While with Chivas, he posted two goals.

“I want to give thanks to the USL San Antonio franchise and Coach Powell for being interested in me and for giving me the opportunity to keep doing what I love to do – playing futbol,” said Alvarez. “I’m happy to join this new family and I can promise that I will do my best every day when I step on the field and will always play my heart out.”

The team is expected to unveil their team name, crest and colors later on this week.

USL San Antonio will open their first season in the Alamo City on the road April 3 against the Seattle Sounders 2 before returning home for their home opener on April 9 against the Swope Park Rangers at Toyota Field.
