USL San Antonio names Darren Powell Head Coach

United Soccer League San Antonio announced Thursday Darren Powell will serve as their head coach.

“I am excited to take the next step in my career by being a part of Spurs Sports & Entertainment,” said Powell. “This is a fantastic opportunity with a first class organization in a community with a vibrant soccer culture that is ready to take soccer to the next level. I’m committed to helping build a successful team on and off the field and can’t wait to get started.”

Before being hired by San Antonio, he served as an academy coach for Crystal Palace in Orlando City. Prior to that, he coached at Elton University and led the school to five championships. He is Elon’s all-time winningest coach with a record of 94-68-23.


Powell was also named was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year four different times during his time at Elon.

The new USL team, still without an official name, will begin playing in 2016 at Toyota Field.
