After month’s of speculation, it became official.

USL San Antonio, the newest pro soccer franchise will officially be called San Antonio FC, Spurs Sports and Entertainment announced on Thursday night.

The announcement was made at the inside the Rock & Brews at the AT&T Center, where around 2,000 soccer supporters came out to show their support as San Antonio works towards bringing a Major League Soccer team to the Alamo City.

“Our club now has its identity, and we can start representing the city of San Antonio with pride,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “San Antonio FC, just like Spurs Sports & Entertainment, will be a big part of this incredible city. As a team, we are prepared to represent the supporters and San Antonio in a professional and respectful manner both on and off the field. I look forward to April 9 when we can step foot on the Toyota Field pitch together for the first time.”

The crest has two different elements. The first is the stripes, representing the branches of the military, a staple of San Antonio. The upward movement signifies the team’s goal to play at the highest level; and the the Spur symbolizes the direct link between San Antonio FC and its parent company, Spurs Sports & Entertainment. SS&E also has the San Antonio Rampage, Stars, Austin Spurs and San Antonio Spurs as part of their franchise list.

The colors Silver and Black are a nod to SS&E and the red represents the red on the Texas flag, showing the pride of the lone star state.

“This is San Antonio’s club,” said San Antonio FC Managing Director, Tim Holt. “As an organization, we are tied to this city like no other, so it became vital for us to reflect that in our name and crest. Everything from the club name, the shape of the crest and the team colors were carefully chosen to best represent San Antonio and reflect our relationship with this amazing city. We feel that our identity pays tribute to San Antonio’s culture and history, while lighting a new path for soccer in our community. We look forward to representing San Antonio and Spurs Sports & Entertainment through the beautiful game, as San Antonio FC.”

San Antonio FC will open their first season in the Alamo City on the road April 3 against the Seattle Sounders 2 before returning home for their home opener on April 9 against the Swope Park Rangers at Toyota Field.
