UIW Football’s record-breaking season continues to get noticed as not one but two Cardinals were given Player of the Week honors.
Senior running back Ra’Quanne Dickens has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore cornerback Malick Phillips was given the honor of SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
Dickens has had a senior season to remember, breaking the single-season rushing yards and single-season rushing touchdowns for the program. He finished with 213 rushing yards against UCA on Saturday, leading the Cardinals to clinch at least a portion of the Southland Conference championship.
“I’m so proud of Ra’Quanne,” UIW Head Coach Eric Morris said in a statement. “He has worked so hard this season, and he had a great game on Saturday. It isn’t easy to have over 200 rushing yards in this league and to see Ra’Quanne do that for the second time this season was pretty special. I’m glad he is being recognized for the effort he has been consistently putting in.”
Phillips had two of UIW’s four interceptions on Saturday, helping the Cardinals set the single-game record for interceptions and giving the team 18 interceptions on the season, which is a new single-season record.
“As he has done all season, Malick came to work on Saturday,” added Morris. “He had two interceptions, which was a key part of a huge team win, and he was very physical throughout the entire game, which is always great to see. I’m proud of his work ethic, and I’m glad he is being recognized again for how hard he plays.”
