Incarnate Word football freshman quarterback Jon Copeland has been named to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award Watch List, it was announced on Thursday.
“Jon is a great leader and a great teammate,” said UIW head football coach Eric Morris said in a statement. “I’m glad he is being recognized for his hard work. It’s hard for a freshman to start sometimes, but you wouldn’t know that by watching Jon play. He is composed during practice and games, and that has helped elevate the program as a whole. I’m excited to see how he continues to develop through the season and his career.”
Copeland has started all five games for the Cardinals and is the first true freshman to start at quarterback in the history of the program. He is throwing for 1,329 yards and totaling 11 touchdowns, nine through the air and two on the ground. His 265.8 yards per game average ranks fourth in the Southland Conference and his 15.45 passing yards per completion leads the Southland Conference.
In UIW’s 52-34 win over Southeastern Louisiana on October 6, Copeland completed 23 passes for 411 yards, breaking the program record for program record for passing yards in a single game.
Incarnate Word is currently 3-2 (3-0, SLC) on the season and will return to the field this Saturday when they travel to face Lamar at 3 p.m. Central Time.
