The University of the Incarnate Word announced on Sunday that women’s basketball coach Christy Smith’s contract will not be renewed for the 2019-2020 season.

“I want to thank Coach Smith for her service to UIW women’s basketball, the athletics department, UIW, and our students,” said UIW Athletic Director Dr. Brian Wickstrom in a statement. “She has helped to develop some fine student-athletes during her time here, and we wish her well in her future endeavors.”

The news comes after UIW closed the 2018-19 season with a 102-53 loss to Abilene Christian on Saturday. Overall, the Cardinals finished the season with a 5-24 record and 5-13 mark in the Southland Conference.

In Smith’s three seasons, she led UIW to a 19-68 record overall and a 16-38 mark in conference play.

UIW will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.
