SAN ANTONIO — The UIW Cardinals football team announced their schedule for the upcoming 2022 season, which will be their first in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Cardinals are coming off their best season in program history, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, a 7-1 conference record, and a 10-3 overall record. They earned their second trip to the NCAA FCS Playoffs and advanced to the second round for the first time in program history.

UIW will open the 2022 season at home against Southern Illinois University on Sept. 3. They will then take on Nevada and Prairie View A&M on the road on September 10 and 17 respectively.

“I’m excited to get started,” UIW Head Coach G.J. Kinne said. “We have an exciting offseason ahead as we prepare for competition in the WAC, and our players and coaches welcome the challenge. While our conference affiliation is changing, our goals are not: UIW Football remains focused on competing for conference championships and making playoff runs. I’m looking forward to working with our players and staff to give fans a team they will be proud of.”

The Cardinals will open conference play against Sam Houston State University at Benson Stadium on September 24. UIW will also host WAC conference games against Abilene Christian University, Lamar University, and Utah Tech.

UIW will then face Stephen F. Austin State University, Nicholls State University, Tarleton State University, and Southern Utah University on the road to complete WAC play.
