The University of the Incarnate Word announced late Monday night that athletic director Dr. Brian Wickstrom is leaving the university effective immediately.
“During his tenure as athletic director, Dr. Brian Wickstrom helped guide our athletic program during a transformational time, secured critical partnerships and elevated sports infrastructure and facilities, improving the overall experience,” said UIW President Dr. Thomas M. Evans in a press release. “I want to thank Brian for his service to the University of the Incarnate Word.”
No reason was given for his departure but the school announced he will be replaced on an interim basis by Richard Duran, the deputy athletic director.
“The university does not comment on personnel matters,” a school spokesperson told the Project Spurs Network.
Wickstrom was hired back in August 2017 and quickly left an imprint on the school’s athletic department. He hired Eric Morris as the head football coach, which saw UIW Football have their best season in program history, bringing home their first conference championship.
Several renovations were made during Wickstrom’s tenure including to the football and baseball stadiums. Most recently, a project was completed to install a state of the art basketball court.
