Three Things to watch vs. Washington Mystics

The San Antonio Stars host the Washington Mystics in hopes of winning a fifth game on the season. These teams met in Washington June 29, with the Mystics prevailing 84-67. Washington (9-9) is coming off an 86-84 loss to the Chicago Sky, while San Antonio (4-13) is coming off a 91-68 loss to the Minnesota Lynx. Here are three things to watch.

  • Where will the offense come from?

The Stars will be without leading-scorer Kayla McBride, who is out for the season with a fractured right foot. The injury occurred during the third quarter in the game vs. Minnesota. McBride was averaging 17.1 points per game, so her offensive production will be hard to replace. Generating offense has been one of the Stars’ biggest problems throughout the season. The Stars are averaging 74.1 points per game, which is last in the league. Moriah Jefferson is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per game. However, no other player is averaging double-digit points on the year. It will be vital to find other scoring options as the season progresses

  •   Defense on the perimeter.

The Mystics shoot 35.7 percent from behind the arch, which is currently third in the WNBA. In last week’s meeting, Washington shot 47 percent from 3-point range.  Furthermore, the Mystics went on an early 18-0 to quickly snatch momentum away from the Stars. To stay in this game, the Stars will have to find a way to close out on the Washington shooters.

  • How will Emma Meesseman be defended?

Meesseman currently averages 14.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Additionally, she leads the WNBA in 3-point percentage, converting 57 percent of her attempts from behind the arch. In their first meeting, she scored 14 points on 6 of 9 shots from the field. She also added four assists. Limiting Meesseman’s touches will play a huge role in a Stars’ victory, as she is the only other Washington player averaging double-figures on the season.
