Texas State Finalizes 2020 Schedule

Texas State made news waves last week as the Bobcats added road games against BYU & Boston College.

Texas State has finally finalized a fully re-built 2020 fall schedule. The Bobcats added two pay-for-play matchups against BYU and Boston College. Just like everything else in college football these days, Texas States’ football schedule has seen quite a bit of cancelations and re-configuring due to COVID-19. After scheduled non-conference opponents Ohio & New Mexico State announced they wouldn’t be playing this fall, the Bobcats were left with an incomplete 10 game schedule.

Conference independent BYU was the perfect opponent, as their football schedule had been completely decimated by cancellations. The Big 10, PAC 12, Mountain West & Mid-American conferences‘ decisions to postpone fall sports left the Cougars with just THREE remaining games. BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has done his best to re-build their fall schedule; adding Texas State and I-35 Rival UTSA in the same week.

In the official announcement Holmoe stated, “We are fortunate that UTSA and Texas State had open dates on their schedules which allowed them to travel to Provo. We look forward to hosting them in LaVell Edwards Stadium and are excited to play football this fall.” The October 24th matchup will be Texas State & BYUs’ 1st ever meeting.

Just 2 days after the program confirmed the BYU game, Texas State also announced another non-conference road game against Boston College!Rumors have swirled throughout fall camp of discussions between the schools on the particulars of a game contract. Texas State beat-writer Keff Ciardello of The Austin American Statesman had reported the tentative matchup as early as the 19th. However, Coach Spavital refrained from commenting until the games were officially announced by both universities.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo sports broke the official news, while Keff flushed out the details.

Boston College will be the Bobcats’ second road game of the season, however Texas State did lose a home game in the schedule amendment. Unfortunately the Bobcats will now play five straight road games games spanning from September 29th to October 24th. While it may be a tough schedule, it is a full 12 games, which was Athletic Director Larry Theis’ goal after the cancellations.

Texas State has finalized its’ fully re-built 2020 schedule just in time, with only 6 days to go before the start of their season! The Bobcats have finished fall camp and had a “mock week” to simulate their week 1 competitive schedule. Texas State is set to play the SMU Mustangs in their home-opener September 5th. The program announced last week that the game will be nationally televised on ESPN!
