Stars waive Hand-Jones, Gilbert


With the WNBA season quickly approaching, the San Antonio Stars must make cuts in order to trim their roster down before the May 16th opener. On Thursday afternoon, two players more got the news.

The Stars have waived center Karla Gilbert and guard Whitney Hand-Jones, Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes announced on Thursday afternoon.

Gilbert was signed to a training camp contract by San Antonio on April 21, and Hand-Jones joined the team on April 10. Both appeared in two preseason games for the Stars.

Hand-Jones was drafted by the Stars with the 32nd pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft from the University of Oklahoma, but sat out the 2013 WNBA season due to injury. Gilbert signed with San Antonio after finishing her career with Texas A&M.

The roster now stands at 14.

The Stars will open the 2014 season on Friday, May 16 on the road against the Atlanta Dream before returning home for their opener against the Tulsa Shock at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
