Stars still show positive signs despite 0-3 start

The San Antonio Stars were picked by most preseason polls to finish last in the league and after an 0-3 start – they seem to be correct with that pick, right?

Not so fast.

San Antonio lost their season opener by nine points, but missed 12 free throws. If they would have made them – the Silver and Black win by three points. In their home loss against Phoenix, again the Stars missed free throws. Its the little mistakes that have kept the Silver and Black out of the win column.

“The way we fought the last 3 quarters is a plus for us,” Stars coach Vickie Johnson said after Saturday’s home opener. “I’ll be excited to see our team next week against Dallas. I think you guys will see the real Stars in action.”

San Antonio played their first two games without leading scorer Kayla McBride, who was playing for a championship overseas. McBride returned in Saturday’s home loss to Phoenix. Moriah Jefferson and Kelsey Plum have yet to see the court, two of the Stars bulk of scoring. Fix the little things and the Stars could easily have a 2-1 record right now.

So what is the bottom line?

It is unfair to judge this San Antonio team without their full lineup on the court. Once Plum, Jefferson, and McBride play a game together – then everyone can make a fair judgement.

But if three games is anything to do by, the Stars will be shining bright in San Antonio this summer.
