Stars run out of gas in overtime loss to Dallas

The San Antonio Stars came up short, losing 97-90 to the Dallas Wings in front of 4,023 fans inside College Park Center on Thursday evening.

San Antonio was led by both Dearica Hamby and Kayla McBride, who each had 18. Kayla Alexander added 13 and Moriah Jefferson chipped in 11 points and five assists for the Stars, who lost their fourth straight.

The Stars trailed 50-34 at halftime, but used a 27-16 third quarter to rally back. San Antonio would force overtime with two separate rallies in the final quarter.

“I was proud of how we competed in the second half,” Stars coach Dan Hughes said. “I thought they really responded to what we did. We turned it into a basketball game. I thought down the stretch of the game itself before the overtime, we defensively were very solid. Offensively, we delivered.”

In the overtime period is where Dallas took over. The Wings outscored the Stars 14-7 in the extra five minutes to put away the Silver and Black for good.

“They came out on a 6-0 run, and when you’re coming out in overtime you can’t let the home team get that much of an advantage,” Jefferson said. “I think we still fought back well, but when you’re on the road you have get it done early, you can’t let it get down to the last minute.”

Dallas (7-7) was led by Plenette Pierson’s 21 points. Odyssey Sims and Skylar Diggins each chipped in 19 points for the Wings, who pulled at .500 with the victory.

“I thought it was a hard fought game,” Dallas coach Fred Williams said. “San Antonio turned it on in the third quarter against us. Having a lead and sustaining a lead is pretty tough. We’ve got to stay focused. I wasn’t pleased with how we let that lead slip away. But in the end, we made some great plays defensively and made some key shots all around from all of our players.”

Up next: The 2-12 Stars will return to the court on Saturday when they host the Atlanta Dream for Becky Hammon retirement night at the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
