San Antonio Stars head coach Dan Hughes said his team needs to take their winning ways from home to the road. Taking on a defensive minded Indiana Fever team was not what the doctor ordered.

Sophia Young-Malcolm scored a season-high 27 points, but the Stars fell 83-76 to the Fever in front of 6,457 fans inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Friday night.

Kalana Greene added 13 points and Danielle Robinson chipped in 12 for San Antonio, who remain winless on the road after six games. The Stars were without Jia Perkins (calf) Alex Montgomery (knee) and Kayla McBride (foot) for the second consecutive game.

“I thought coming into the second half we kind of started off a little bit slacking and they were more aggressive,” Young-Malcolm said. Overall I thought our defense was generally good. Congratulations to them. I thought they played hard and for us, we need to be more aggressive.”

Indiana used a 22-14 third quarter to pull away, taking their biggest lead of the game of 12 at the midway point with a 14-3 run. However, San Antonio rallied as Greene stole the ball for a bucket to cut the Stars deficit to six. But that is as far as they would get.

The Fever were led by Marissa Coleman’s career-high 25 points, including 12 in the third quarter. Lynetta Kizer added 13 points off the bench and Shenise Johnson added 11 for Indiana (7-6), who won their fourth straight game.

“We had a much better second half,” Coleman said. “Second half we came in, we locked down on defense, communicate a lot more, moved the ball better on offense and we played much better after halftime.”

The two teams will close out the season series in two weeks in San Antonio.

The Stars are now 3-9 on the season and will return to the court on Sunday when they face Maya Moore and the Minnesota Lynx at 6 p.m. inside the Target Center.
