Stars hire Vickie Johnson as next Head Coach

The San Antonio Stars have hired Vickie Johnson as their next Head Coach, the team announced on Thursday morning.

Johnson will be the ninth head coach in Stars franchise history and has spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach under Dan Hughes.

The 44-year-old spent 13 seasons in the WNBA, including four with San Antonio. During her time with the then-Silver Stars, Johnson led the Stars to the Western Conference Finals and the WNBA Finals in 2008.

Johnson will take over the youngest team in the league. The Stars have won just 13 combined games in the past two seasons and lost a total of 57 – but this is without star players Kayla McBride and Danielle Robinson.

“Coach Johnson’s experience, passion for teaching, fierce competitive spirit and commitment to our organization made her the perfect candidate to lead our team moving forward,” said Stars General Manager Ruth Riley. “We have been very fortunate to have Coach Johnson as a part of our Stars family for the past decade. She has a strong understanding of our culture and goals, and we are thrilled that she will be our next head coach.”

The Stars will open the 2017 season on May 13 on the road against the New York Liberty at 2 p.m. inside Madison Square Garden.
