The San Antonio Stars received the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, it was announced on Thursday night inside the ESPN Studios in Connecticut.
San Antonio finished the 2015 season with a record of 8-26, the worst in the league. The Stars had a 27.6 percent chance of grabbing the number one pick. Other lottery teams included Seattle, Connecticut and Atlanta.
The Stars second overall pick gives them the highest selection in franchise history. In 2015, San Antonio selected Dearica Hamby with the sixth overall pick and traded away the ninth pick to the New York Liberty in exchange for Alex Montgomery.
“The last time we had a No. 2 pick, it ended up being pretty impactful in a lot of ways,” Stars head coach Dan Hughes told the team’s official website. “I think that’s what we’ll look for again. We’re going to have options, and we’re going to look for a face of the franchise.”
