Freeman Coliseum – The preseason isn’t about the final score. It is about what you can get out of your players as coaches begin to shape and mold their roster, for the San Antonio Stars – the roster is taking a nice shape.

Kayla Alexander scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, but the Stars fell 79-71 to the Tulsa Shock in front of 4,237 fans at Freeman Coliseum on Thursday afternoon.

Jia Perkins added 13 points and rookie Dearica Hamby chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds for San Antonio, who lost both of their preseason games for the second straight season.

“Offensively we moved the ball better,” Stars head coach Dan Hughes said. “We did not shoot the ball well, but that’s not easy with as many players as we played. We have players who did a lot of things well, we have work to do in the next eight or nine days.”

San Antonio began the game aggressive, but Tulsa used a 19-5 run to take a nine point lead into the second quarter. The Stars would outscore the Shock 19-18 in the second to cut the deficit to 45-39 at halftime.

Tulsa was led by Riquna Williams, who finished with 18 points off the bench. Brianna Kiesel and Plenette Pierson each added ten for the Shock, who finished the preseason with an undefeated record.

Hamby averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the preseason, proving she can be effective quickly for the silver and black.

“I’m just getting a feel for everything,” Hamby said. “I’m getting more comfortable with the plays and having a better flow offensively, my teammates do a good job of getting me the ball and its my job to finish.”

Sydney Colson had a game-high seven assists and played high on the defensive end in her 11 minutes of work.

The Stars finish the preseason 0-2 and will return to the court next Friday when they open the 2015 season in Phoenix against the defending champion Mercury inside U.S. Airways Center at 9 p.m.
