Stars down Fever for first road win of the season

Kayla McBride led a balanced scoring attack for the San Antonio Stars as they earned a 79-72 road win over the Indiana Fever in front of 12,282 fans at Bakers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday afternoon.

McBride led the Stars with 18 points, including 2-for-5 from three-point range. Erika De Souza had her best game of the season with 14 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Plum added 12 points and six rebounds for San Antonio, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

“Getting our first road win of the season was amazing,” Stars coach Vickie Johnson said. “We worked so hard in practice, so I’m glad it carried over to the game. These past few days were very important for us with the work we put in and it showed today.”

San Antonio was without Moriah Jefferson for the second straight game and is going through concussion protocol. Plum had her best game of her young career and is slowly getting more comfortable in the offense says her coach.

“It’s good to see her getting a little bit more comfortable with the system and the speed of the game,” Johnson said. “She had those two big 3-pointers early on and she had a great assist total. It’s very important for her to get in rhythm and get our team flowing.”

The Fever were led by Candice Dupree’s 14 points. Briann January added 13 for Indiana (7-10), who lost their third straight.

“Until we battle on the defensive end for every possession and every second, we’re going to come up short. I’ve been saying it for a while now, but we have to continue making improvements on defense,” Indiana coach Pokey Chapman said. “It’s about discipline. It’s knowing their personnel. It’s not always about just effort. I think we play hard, I really do.”

Up next: The Stars are now 2-16 on the season and will return to the court on Sunday when they face the Connecticut Sun at 2 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.
