The San Antonio Stars closed out the preseason with a 77-70 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks in front of 2,307 fans at the AT&T Center on Tuesday night.

Rookie Haley Peters had a game-high 20 points and Dearica Hamby added 14 points and six rebounds for San Antonio, who are looking towards a younger core to begin the season.

“My evaluation is looking at how we’re evolving,” Stars coach Dan Hughes said. “We’ve got a very young team that wants to please, wants to do some good things.”

San Antonio was without Moriah Jefferson and Kayla McBride, two key pieces for the Silver and Black. That is something that leaves Hughes not happy.

“We haven’t been able to put our team on the court,” he said. “I haven’t had the chance to put the team together. Like ‘Mo (Jefferson) and Kayla (McBride) haven’t been on the floor..a little frustrated because I haven’t had a chance to blend them.”

Los Angeles was led by Chelsea Gray’s 18 points and six rebounds. Rebecca Tobin added 14 points for Los Angeles, who was without several key starters – including Candace Parker.

The Stars finish the preseason 2-1 and will open the 2016 season on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they welcome the Atlanta Dream to the AT&T Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
