Highlights:
The San Antonio Stars are looking to improve with each passing game. While there are signs of improvement, there are also signs of work still to be done. The latter was obvious as the Silver and Black continued a three game road trip.
Moriah Jefferson had a career-high 20 points and five rebounds, but the Stars fell 81-75 to the Chicago Sky in front of 5,744 fans inside Allstate Arena on Tuesday night.
Kayla McBride and Monique Currie each added 14 points for San Antonio, who lost their third consecutive game. McBride also had 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
“We wanted to control them in transition, out-rebound them, be aggressive on the offensive end,” McBride said. “I think we did that for most of the game, but a couple of mental lapses down the stretch cost us the game.”
Chicago (7-8) was led by Elena Delle Donne’s game-high 23 points. Cappie Pondexter added 15 for the Sky, who snapped a four-game losing streak with the loss.
“It’s nice to put up 81 points and probably shoot our lowest field goal percentage, but we kept at it, we attacked and we got to the free throw line,” Chicago coach Pokey Chapman said. “I thought the difference in the second half was that we moved the basketball around a little bit more. Our assists were really low in the first half, but we moved the basketball.”
San Antonio trailed by 12 early in the third quarter and rallied to take a two point lead late in the quarter. McBride, Currie and Jefferson fueled a run, but mistakes would prove costly.
“We’re streaky, we’re really young,” Stars coach Dan Hughes said of the comeback. “We have the ability to come back on you, we’ve done that a lot. We also have the ability to not get consistency between our offense and our defensive play (when) things are getting kind of tough.”
Up next: The Stars are now 2-10 on the season and will return to the court on Thursday when they close out their three game road trip in Dallas against the Wings at 7 p.m.
