Toyota Field – San Antonio Scorpions head coach Alen Marcina said his team was better than their 4-1 loss to the Austin Aztex in the preseason. After Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup match, he said the same thing.
San Antonio was eliminated in an 0-2 loss to Austin in front of an announced crowd of 2,000 fans at Toyota Field.
After a scoreless first half, the visitors found the scoreboard in the second. Mikey Ambrose sent a shot over San Antonio ‘keeper Daryl Sattler in the 50th minute to put the Aztex up by a goal.
In the 76th minute, Omar Cummings was pulled down by an Austin defender. However, the controversial non-call sent fans and Coach Marcina into frustration. A minute later, Trevin Caesar added a goal to seal the 2-0 win for Austin.
“We did enough to win the game,” a frustrated Marcina said following the game. “But that’s the way things go. Congrats to Austin.”
The Scorpions are currently 2-1-4 (7 points) on the season and will resume NASL play when they welcome the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers to Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
