Toyota Field – Last season, the San Antonio Scorpions made the most of their chances. So far this season, they are struggling to put the ball in the back of the net.

The Scorpions earned a point as they played to a 1-1 draw against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in front of 6,396 fans inside Toyota Field on Saturday night.

“I think our last four games have been excellent,” Scorpions head coach Alen Marcina said. “If we started that way from the opening game against Tampa, I think we’d be in a different position right now – I feel strongly about that. We’re a very good team, we’ve been a bit unlucky. We have to look at the positives and move forward.”

San Antonio got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute when Joseph Nane flicked the ball over the head of Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper Lionel Brown to put the Scorpions up by a goal. The Strikers got aggressive after the goal, Dani Sanchez shot the ball from 12 yards away, but San Antonio ‘keeper Daryl Sattler made the save. In the 43rd minute, Stefano Pinho put the ball into the open goal to tie the game 1-1.

Both teams had several chances to take the lead in the second half. Fort Lauderdale had a chance in the 68th minute when Léo Moura was awarded a free kick, but the attempt went over the bar. For most of the second half, the San Antonio defense kept the ball in the Strikers zone. Preventing them from getting much of an offensive flow.

San Antonio’s César Elizondo blasted a shot towards the net as Brown made a diving save to keep the score even. Moments later, Billy Forbes would come away empty handed on back-to-back attempts as the score remained locked at a goal apiece. Neither team would find the back of the net again as the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

“I think the last five minutes we should have won it ,” Forbes said. “I should have won it for the team. Their keeper came up big and there is nothing I can do about that.”

The Scorpions are now 2-2-4 (8 points) on the Spring Season and will return to the pitch next Saturday when they travel to Atlanta to face the Silverbacks at 6:30 p.m. inside Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
