The San Antonio Scorpions struggled offensively all game long as they fell 0-2 to the Tampa Bay Rowdies in front of 6,135 fans at Al Lang Stadium on Saturday night.
Tampa Bay created chances for the majority of the first half and looked to take the lead early. The home team scored two goals in the first 14 minutes, but the referee waived both off for off-sides penalties. Despite the aggressive play from the Rowdies, the match would remain scoreless going to the second half.
In the second half, Scorpions defender Zourab Tsiskaridze was called for a penalty and Tampa Bay was awarded a penalty kick. Corey Hertzog stepped up and placed the ball past San Antonio ‘keeper Daniel Fernandes in the 50th minute to put the Rowdies up 0-1.
San Antonio’s best two scoring chances came in the final minutes of the match. Rafael Castillo put a ball on net, but Tampa Bay goalkeeper Matt Pickens made the easy save. In the 87th minute, Omar Cummings sent a shot from 22 yards out, but it went wide of the Rowdies net.
Darnell King extended the Rowdies lead to two goals when he put home a rebound after Fernandes’ initial save.
The loss puts the Scorpions playoff hopes in serious doubt as the defending champions fell eight points behind Tampa Bay for the final playoff berth in the NASL table.
The Scorpions are now 3-4-6 (13 points) on the Fall Season and will return to the pitch next Saturday when they welcome the Atlanta Silverbacks to Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
