Saturday Region IV semifinal scores, recaps: Boerne Champion survives; Antonian Prep ousted

5A Division II: Boerne Champion (12-1) 45, Sharyland Pioneer (11-2) 38 (OT)

Despite the best efforts of Sharyland Pioneer quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger, Boerne Champion and quarterback Luke Boyers outlasted a heroic effort by its opponents in a 45-38 overtime victory at the Alamodome to advance to the 5A Division II Region IV Final.

Boyers accounted for 341 yards and five total touchdowns in the victory. His 20-yard touchdown in overtime proved to be the game-winner. Boyers finished with 290 passing yards and two touchdowns while picking up three rushing scores for the Changers. Tamari Jenkins paced the Champion offense with 110 yards on the ground, including a touchdown.

Marburger finished with 476 passing yards and a pair of scores and added another three rushing touchdowns on the ground. His 1-year run with 6:57 remaining in regulation made the score 38-36. The Diamondbacks converted the two-point attempt to tie the score at 38 to force overtime.


4A Division I: Lampasas 66 (12-1), Needville 44 (10-3)

In a game that featured 1,238 yards of offense, Ace Whitehead continued to put up huge numbers as Lampasas downed Needville 66-44 to advance to the 4A Division I Region IV Final.

Whitehead, a junior, completed 16-of-20 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns while adding another pair of touchdowns with his legs. Jaylon Porter caught six passes for 227 yards and three scores, while Jack Jerome rushed for 114 yards and a score. Daunte Cuffie added two rushing touchdowns to pace the Badgers.

For Needville, Ashton Stredick rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Quarterback Tannor Baker threw for 330 yards and three scores, two of them going to Vincent Villareal. Villareal finished with 198 receiving yards on six grabs.

TAPPS Division I: Plano John Paul II (10-3) 31, Antonian Prep (9-4) 13

After leading 14-13 at intermission, Plano John Paul II pulled away in the second half in a 31-13 victory over Antonian Prep in Georgetown to advance to the TAPPS Division I state championship.

UTEP quarterback commit Khalil Warfield was stuffed in the running game, finishing with 58 yards on 22 carries and two total touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Bryon Armstrong hooked up with Warfield on a 22-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Antonian Prep finished the season at 9-4.

TAPPS Division III: Boerne Geneva (9-4) 77, The Woodlands Christian (12-1) 45

Cade Barone threw for 266 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns as Boerne Geneva advanced to the TAPPS Division III state title game with a 77-45 victory over The Woodlands Christian.

Barone threw for five touchdowns and ran for two more as the Eagles rolled up 373 yards on the ground in the victory. Brock Ambelang ran for 179 yards and a pair of scores while Josh Lopez rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown to pace the Geneva offense.
