San Antonio Stars Week 1 Update

The WNBA season is well underway and the San Antonio Stars season tipped off last Friday night in Phoenix. While the Stars went on to lose their season opener 76-71 to the Mercury, there is still plenty of games still to be played. Jia Perkins led the way for the Stars with 20 points and the first game offered some glimpses of what to expect from the Stars this season. While the Stars still have a strong core of Danielle Robinson, Danielle Adams and Jia Perkins, they still have many new faces to get used to as well as playing styles. It might take them a little while longer to get adjusted to before they can start winning.

Because the Stars were playing a short handed Phoenix team that was missing Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor (out for the 2015 season) and Brittney Griner (suspended) they still struggled and in the second quarter, could only manage to score eight points. If the Stars had somehow avoided that altogether, they could have stolen a win from a team that is missing their best players. In past years, if the Stars lost the first game of the season, they usually won the second game. However, this year will be different as they are missing a star player and Sophia Young-Malcolm is still not playing at a high level.

The Stars new rookie Dearica Hamby started off her career with 10 points and 5 rebounds, and I expect that head coach Dan Hughes will continue to push her and develop her this year. It takes rookies some time to develop and get better especially when it comes to defense and Hamby still has a ways to go.

Tomorrow night, the Stars play the Dream in Atlanta which will be a tough match up considering the fact that the Dream have lost two in a row and the Stars simply do not have anyone on the roster who can defend Angel McCoughtry. It will also be the Stars first real test on how they will fare in the 2015 season and whether or not they will be a playoff team this year.
