San Antonio FC moved one step closer to clinching a playoff berth with a 2-0 win over Saint Louis FC on Saturday evening inside World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
“I thought today was a very tight game that had playoff implications for both teams,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Fortunately for us tonight we took our chances in key moments of the game. The guys fought bravely, defended well and put their bodies on the line to preserve the clean sheet. I’m very proud of the way the team performed tonight.”
SAFC got the scoring started in the 12th minute when Sebastien Thuriere stole the ball and beat the Saint Louis goalkeeper in the left corner of the net to put the visitors up by a goal.
Just before halftime, captain Rafa Castillo added on to the lead by chipping home a goal in stoppage time to give San Antonio the 2-0 advantage.
The second half saw both clubs creating chances, but not getting a solid goal. Matt Cardone was the SWBC Man of the Match, making seven huge saves and stopped a penalty kick to get the clean sheet.
The victory moved SAFC into a tie for seventh in the Western Conference table.
Up next: San Antonio FC (9-8-7, 34 points) will continue their road trip on Wednesday to face the Swope Park Rangers at 7:30 p.m.
