Toyota Field – San Antonio FC coach Darren Powell knew his team was playing four games in 12 days, rest would be key. He did just that as key players rested as SAFC opened U.S. Open Cup play.
Jacques Francois scored twice as he led San Antonio FC to a 3-1 win over Corinthians FC SA in Round 2 of the Lamar U.S. Open Cup at Toyota Field on Wednesday night.
The lone goal of the first half came off the foot of Jason Johnson beat the Corinthians in the third minute to put SAFC up 1-0 in the third minute. The rest of the first half saw minimal chances from both teams.
Corinthians tied the match after halftime when Callum Chapman-Page beat San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford in the 47th minute to make it one goal apiece for each club.
From there, San Antonio would take control. Francois answered back with a 40-footer that found that back of the net in the 70th minute and tapped home another goal two minutes later to seal the 3-1 win for SAFC.
“We started on the front foot, I thought the first 20 or so minutes we were playing some good soccer,” Powell said after the game. “The second half we didn’t get off to the best of starts but I thought we were in control for most of it. Then we got a goal from Jacques on his first game, basically his first professional game, and he took it well. Then his second goal was a good goal and it was just a matter of seeing out the win at that point.”
Francois made his San Antonio debut, scoring twice and assisting on Johnson’s goal.
“I did what I had to do best and that was to score goals,” he said. “I knew it was 1-1 and I knew I could score more for my team and for the fans. I just enjoyed the game.”
San Antonio FC will now travel to Des Moines and face Des Moines Menace (PDL) for Round 3 of the U.S. Open Cup in June.
SAFC is 2-3-3 (9 points) on the season and will return to USL action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when they welcome the OKC Energy FC to Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
