San Antonio FC stays red hot, wins fifth straight match

A red hot start for San Antonio FC got even hotter as SAFC kept their record start alive with a 1-0 win over Sacramento Republic FC in front of 7,237 fans at Toyota Field on Saturday night.

Both sides had solid chances in the first half, but it was goalkeeper Diego Restrepo who shined. He made a key save on a Sacramento scoring chance and defender Stephen McCarthy made a second stop on an attempt before clearing the ball.

San Antonio FC was awarded a penalty kick in the second half after forward AJ Ajeakwa was brought down inside the box. Rafa Castillo stepped up and put home the penalty kick, giving SAFC the 1-0 advantage.

The match would get chippy as full time approached, but San Antonio held on for the win.

“I’m very proud of our guys for the way they competed and challenged for everything,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We talk about that and that’s what you’re going to see from these players. You see it week in and week out; they’re going to give everything [every time].”

The win was the fifth straight for San Antonio and their seventh in the last eight games.

Player of the Match:

Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo is RB90’s POTM. He made four saves on the night and recorded his second consecutive clean sheet and is 2-0 since taking the starting spot from the injured Matt Cardone.

“Diego knew he had to come in and step up in that moment and tonight he certainly did that,” Powell said. I think he’s gotten better and better.”

Up next: San Antonio FC is now 7-0-1 (22 points) on the season and will return to the pitch next Saturday when they host Seattle Sounders 2 at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
