As San Antonio FC gets ready to kick off their inaugural season this weekend, there remains much to learn about this new soccer club. Being the newest sports franchise in San Antonio, and under the ownership of Spurs Sports and Entertainment, San Antonio FC has a lot of expectations to meet this year in hope of rising to the MLS one day.
Fans of San Antonio Scorpions will be pleased to learn that a few of their old favorites will return in Silver and Black. Matt Cardone, Milton Palacios, Victor Araujo, and Rafael Castillo will all be returning to Toyota Field as members of the USL team.
Fans will also have quite a few new faces to learn, including SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell who comes to the Alamo City after serving as Academy Director at Orlando City SC. SAFC goalkeeper Josh Ford, also from Orlando City SC, will serve as starting keeper.
SAFC will also have good professional experience with a few former MLS players. Left back Greg Cochrane played formerly for the LA Galaxy and the Chicago Fire, while center back Stephen McCarthy brings experience from 4 years with the New England Revolution. Similarly, midfielder Carlos Alvarez played in the MLS with Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids.
Also interesting is the professional experience from SAFC’s forwards. Manolo Sanchez, formerly of the New York Red Bulls, and Jason Johnson who played with the Houston Dynamo and the Chicago Fire, will both add some welcomed experience on the strike.
Overall, the SAFC no doubt has some great experience coming into their first season. With all of the combined effort, this season should prove entertaining and noteworthy for San Antonio fans. San Antonio FC kicks off for the first time on Sunday, April 3rd at 7 p.m. against the Seattle Sounders 2 at Starfire Stadium.
