TULSA – San Antonio FC (10-2-3) fell to FC Tulsa (4-2-7) 0-1 at ONEOK Field on Saturday night in their penultimate regular-season match of the 2020 season.

The defeat is just the second all season for SAFC, who locked up their place atop the Group D standings as well as a playoff berth with their win over Austin Bold FC last Wednesday.

“I think the biggest takeaway for us is the number of chances we created and how we didn’t put any in the back of the net,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We have to be more ruthless. We had six or seven clear cut chances, and we have to put one of those in the back of the net.

The match was scoreless all night long despite solid chances from both sides. In the last 10 minutes, both clubs went hard to get the go-ahead. Luis Solignac’s chance was stopped before Ethan Bryant sent his shot high.

In stoppage time, Tulsa finally cracked the scoreboard. Following a clearance from the SAFC, the ball landed on the boot of Eric Bird near the top of the box, where he fired a shot past SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone in stoppage time for the lead.

Cardone would finish with five saves on the night, tying his highest save count in a single match this season.

“It could have been a lopsided game in our favor if we buried our opportunities,” Marcina said. “That’s what we will learn. All we can do is learn, progress, and make sure we are ready for Austin.”

San Antonio FC is now 10-2-3 (33 points) on the season and will return to the pitch next Sunday at 5 p.m. to face the Austin Bold (4-3-6) in their regular-season finale.
