San Antonio FC knew all they needed was a win to get into the playoffs, but they would have to do it in a place they hadn’t won all season. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to change much.
SAFC fell 0-3 to the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC in front of 2,347 fans at H-E-B Park on Saturday night to close out their inaugural USL season.
After a scoreless first half, RGV found the back of the net three times in the second 45 minutes. Eric Bird’s shot from distance sealed the win for the home side in the 78th minute. The Toros added goals from Ruben Luna and Yair Arboleda to seal the 3-0 win.
“It was a very tight game, until the last ten or fifteen minutes,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We were right in it till the end fighting for a playoff spot, and now we just have to hope and see what happens in the other games.”
The result combined with the Orange County Blues win eliminates San Antonio from playoff contention.
San Antonio finished their inaugural season with a 10-12-8 record and 38 points.
