Toyota Field – San Antonio FC knew they needed to get positive results in their two-game homestand to remain in the playoff race. The club ended the week with six points and confidence as they embark on another road trip.

Rafa Castillo’s second half goal gave San Antonio FC a 1-0 win over Seattle Sounders 2 in front of 6,417 fans at a rainy Toyota Field on Saturday night.

SAFC had the better scoring chances in the first half. The best chance came on a Rafa Castillo free kick that went wide and minutes later Carlos Alvarez’s chance was stopped by the Seattle goalkeeper. Both sides went into the locker rooms scoreless after 45 minutes.

The weather caused a delay to start the second half after lightning was in the area. However, it was the home side that struck down once play began. In the 51st minute, Castillo put SAFC up for good, taking a pass from Taylor Morgan to make it 1-0 San Antonio. The goal was Castillo’s fourth of the season and the first assist for Morgan.

“Overall, we got the clean sheet, which is something we pride ourselves on,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We were able to hold on to that tonight and preserve it, and it put us in a position to win the game. Fortunately, tonight we were able to hold on to the lead and win the match.”

Matt Cardone would come up big in the later part of the match. Making key saves, including a header that found its way into his arms.

“Matt played his best game in a SAFC shirt in my opinion,” Powell said of the Trinity University graduate.

The victory sees SAFC move up six spots to the eighth and final playoff berth with seven games remaining in the season.

Up next: San Antonio FC is now 8-8-7 (31 points) on the season and will return to the pitch next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Saint Louis FC inside World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
