San Antonio FC has signed defender Kai Greene for the 2019 USL Championship season, the club announced on December 6.
Greene joins SAFC after spending the 2018 season with the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, where he tallied 48 clearances, 41 interceptions, 54 tackles, and a 70 percent duels success rate. He appeared in 18 matches and totaled 1,345 minutes.
“We’re excited for Kai to join our squad,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said in a statement. “He’s a player we identified during the offseason to come in and help our back line. He’s versatile between the center-back and right-back positions and has three years of USL experience. We’re looking forward to working with him in 2019.”
Greene is the first of many pieces being added to San Antonio’s defensive unit after the club lost Greg Cochrane and Stephen McCarthy to retirement as well as Darnell King to Nashville. Cyprian Hedrick recently revealed on social media he would not be returning to the club.
“I’m very excited to join this professional club,” Greene said. “It’s important that the fans get a championship-caliber team this season and we will work hard to give them that. We have a lot to prove and we’ll do so by working collectively.”
