SAFC keeps playoff hopes alive with 3-1 win over Las Vegas

SAN ANTONIO – A two-goal night from Ever Guzman lifted San Antonio FC to a 3-1 win over Las Vegas Lights FC at Toyota Field on Saturday night.

The win was the second straight for SAFC, who will enter the final weekend of the 2018 USL season looking for a win and some help in order to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

“You look at what’s at stake and at this point of the year they’re all meaningful games,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Tonight we went down in the first ten minutes but the response from the players was fantastic. We knew we could come out in the second half and play better than we did in the first, which I think we did, and the goals were executed well by the team.”

Las Vegas would find the scoreboard first on the night just 11 minutes into the match when Sammy Ochoa got loose and beat SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone to put the visitors up a goal.

San Antonio tied the game up at 1-1 when Lance Laing found Guzman, who slotted the ball home in the 34th minute to knot the score up going into the locker room at halftime.

Guzman added another goal just after halftime when he took a pass from Ethan Bryant, putting it home for his second of the night. Laing finalized the scoring with a goal, marking another game with a goal and an assist.

“Obviously we have to take it one game at a time, and so far that’s been good for us. We have one more game and we just have to win it,” he said.

San Antonio FC is now 14-12-7 (49 points) on the season and will return to the pitch next Saturday for their regular season finale against RGV FC Toros (8-12-13) at 7:30 p.m. CT at Toyota Field.
