AT&T Center – Sporting a new ‘do, San Antonio Stars guard Danielle Robinson came into media day with hope and excitement for the new-look Stars. Due to various injuries last season, the former Oklahoma Sooner had to step up and fill some big shoes when Becky Hammon was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Robinson says she will use that experience and apply it to the 2014 season when it opens next Friday.
“I’m very excited to get back on the court,” Robinson said. “I spent some time working with Becky [Hammon] and seeing how tough she is, I’m ready to do what I need to do to inspire my teammates.”
After Robinson suffered a knee injury near the end of the 2013 campaign, she spent time in rehab to get strength back in her knee and build up her endurance until the end January before going overseas to the Czech Republic to play for the next three months.
You can’t deny the connections between the Stars and their ‘brother’ team, the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson even says she models her game on the court after two current Spurs point guards.
“Patty [Mills] and Tony [Parker] a little it of both,” Robinson told StarsHoops. “The energy that they both bring to the table when they are on the floor season in and season out is something I want to bring to the Stars.”
Robinson returned to San Antonio on Saturday and played in her first preseason game on Tuesday morning against the Tulsa Shock. Despite not being with the team during training camp, she found an instant connection with the Stars newest player, Kayla McBride.
“I’m a basketball junkie, so I’ve got to watch her and see what she does,” Robinson said of McBride.
In 2013, Robinson averaged 11.2 points per game – the best scoring numbers of her career and now will use what she has learned from Hammon and others to prepare the Stars for a run at the WNBA playoffs. A season that will begin with a new name and identity.
“I’m still use to ‘silver’ but I like that we are the Stars,” Robinson said of the teams new look. “We are all excited to get out there with our new jerseys and sponsorship and play some basketball.”
The Stars will open the 2014 season on Friday May 16 on the road against the Atlanta Dream at 6:30 p.m. before returning home the next night for their home opener against the Tulsa Shock at the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
