Region IV semifinal scores, recaps: Brandeis survives Vela, Wagner squeaks past Harlan


6A Division I

Converse Judson (12-1) 69, Laredo United (10-3) 21

Mike Chandler II completed 15-of-22 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns as Converse Judson rolled to a 69-21 victory over Laredo United in the nightcap at the Alamodome. The victory sets up a highly anticipated encounter with Lake Travis at the Alamodome on Saturday.

Four different Judson receivers caught touchdown passes. Anthony Shelton finished with 87 yards and a score, while Amarea Bailey-Davis added 84 yards and a touchdown grab for the Rockets.

Junior De”Anthony Lewis rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns for the Rockets, while the ‘ir of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Wayo Huerta capped off a stellar career throwing for 345 yards and three touchdowns for Laredo United, who finishes at 10-3 on the season. Tanner Sanchez had 139 receiving yards and a score, while Aric De Los Santos finished with 112 yards and two touchdowns through the air for United.

Lake Travis (12-1) 52, Weslaco (10-3) 17

Lake Travis broke open a 3-3 tie after the first quarter with 28 second-quarter points en route to a 52-17 victory over Weslaco.

Nate Yarnell completed 17-of-24 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers. Grayson Sandlin made the most of his four receptions, hooking up with Yarnell on two touchdowns through the air. Weston Stephens rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown to pace the Lake Travis offense.

Jacob Cavazos compiled 240 total yards, including 144 yards on the ground, and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Weslaco offense.

Region IV Final

6A Division II

Brandeis (13-0) 21, Edinburg Vela (9-4) 14

The only unblemished 6A team in San Antonio had quite the scare in Laredo, but elite junior signal-caller Jordan Battles pulled Brandeis through in a 21-14 come from behind victory over Edinburg Vela in the Class 6A Region IV semifinal.

Trailing 14-0, Battles broke free on a 21-yard touchdown run to put the Broncos on the scoreboard. Battles would finish with a game-high 103 rushing yards and had all but 10 of the 34 team carries for Brandeis in the victory.

With 00:52 remaining before halftime, Battles hit Josh Suarez on a 58-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 14 following a successful point after.

Battles hooked up with Suarez again from 10 yards out in the third quarter, which proved to be the game-winner for unbeaten Brandeis. Battles would finish with 141 yards through the air, while Suarez caught five passes for 86 yards.

Sophomore Aidan Inesta-Rodriguez had a stellar game on both sides of the ball coming up with a pair of huge catches and a key interception on defense to set up the game-winning touchdown.

Austin Westlake (12-1) 45, Weslaco East (9-4) 14

Austin Westlake raced out to a 38-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 45-14 victory over Weslaco East at Alamo Stadium on Friday night to set up a Region IV Final with Brandeis at the Alamodome.

Kirkland Michaux threw for five touchdowns to lead the Chaparrals. Ryan Lindley and Mason Magnum both reeled in a pair of touchdown strikes from Michaux in the victory.

Ramsey Vasquez rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns for Weslaco East, which finished its season at 9-4.

Region IV Final

Brandeis (13-0) vs. Austin Westlake (12-1), Friday 7:30 p.m., Alamodome

5A Division I

Wagner (12-1) 48, Harlan (12-1) 46

In a game that lived up to the hype, Wagner stayed in contention for its second straight regional title by outlasting previously unbeaten Harlan 48-46 at the Alamodome.

Wagner, who committed 24 penalties, rumbled to 560 rushing yards in the victory. Junior L.J. Butler continued rolling up the numbers with 209 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while sophomore quarterback Isaiah Williams added 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Joerell Brown added 80 yards and two touchdowns on four carries for the Thunderbirds.

Elite level junior Kannon Williams showed why he will be a name to remember in the recruiting world over the next 12 months. Williams completed 19-of-34 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns compared to one interception for the Hawks. Williams added another two touchdowns on the ground in a losing effort. En’dreas Spriggs caught eight passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns, while senior Jacory Logan added seven catches for 118 yards and a score.

Navarro (13-0) 31, Sinton (8-5) 22

Euler Deleon set the Navarro single-season rushing record by going over 2,000 yards for the season as Navarro withstood a late Sinton rally to advance to the 4A Division I Region IV Final with a 31-22 victory.

Deleon rushed for three first-half touchdowns and finished with 223 yards on the night. The victory marks the third time over the past four seasons that Navarro has reached the Region IV final.

Wimberley (10-3) 42, Rockport-Fulton (8-5) 41

Wimberley thwarted a late two-point conversion attempt to survive a 42-41 decision over Rockport-Fulton to advance in 4A Division II.

Cooper McCollum threw for three touchdown passes to three different receivers in the victory. Christian Marshall finished with 120 yards on four receptions and a touchdown to lead the Wimberley receiving corps, while Josh Limely and Jaxon Watts both reeled in touchdowns from the arm of McCollum. Moses Wray rushed for 124 yards and a score for the Texans.

Marshall returned an interception 36 yards to paydirt to break a 35-35 tie in the fourth quarter to set up the dramatic ending.

Joe Franks rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns to lead Rockport-Fulton, while Garret Loudermilk added 118 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Navarro (13-0) vs. Wimberley (10-3), TBD

3A Division I

Columbus (11-2) 34, Vanderbilt Industrial (11-2) 28

Hallettsville (10-2) 28, George West (12-1) 21

Jon Brooks rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns as Hallettsville held on to hand George West its only blemish of the season, 28-21.

3A Division II

Ganado (10-3) 28, Poth (11-2) 14

East Bernard (13-0) 28, Comfort (10-3) 6

Comfort quarterback Oscar Falcon hit Coltyn Barraza on an 81-yard touchdown strike just 17 seconds into the game, but unbeaten East Bernard would recover for a 28-6 victory over Comfort in 3A Division II.

Dallas Novicke accounted for three touchdowns in the victory for East Bernard.

Region IV Final

2A Division I

Refugio (13-0) 45, Shiner (11-1) 43

In a game that had over 1,000 yards of total offense, Refugio quarterback Austin Ochoa compiled 515 total yards and five touchdowns as Refugio advanced with a 45-43 victory over previously unbeaten Shiner.

Ochoa completed 16-of-26 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns while picking up another 163 yards on the ground to go with two more touchdowns. Jordan Kelley caught four passes for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bobcats.

Donyai Taylor rushed for 290 yards and five touchdowns to lead Shiner in a losing effort.

Holland (13-0) 26, Mason (9-4) 0

Refugio (13-0) vs. Holland (13-0), Thursday 7:30 p.m., Alamodome

2A Division II

Falls City (12-1) 55, Granger (10-3) 8

Brady Lyssy rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter as Falls City stormed out to a 48-0 halftime lead en route to a 55-8 victory over Granger in the 2A Division II regional semifinals.

Lyssy finished with 206 yards on just 12 carries in the rout. The victors would rush for 390 yards on 39 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Jaxson Pipes threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns for the Beavers, while Darren Lopez added 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. Carson Dziuk caught a pair of touchdown passes for Falls City.
