Rampage win streak ends with home loss to San Diego

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Rampage saw their five game winning streak come to an end with a 5-3 loss to the San Diego Gulls in front of 5,220 fans at the AT&T Center on Saturday evening.

The loss will no doubt leave San Antonio coach Eric Veilleux upset with his team giving up four goals in the opening period and giving up two power play goals in the process. The lone bright spot was the Rampage outshot San Diego in the game.

The opening 20 minutes belong to San Diego as they scored four goals to blow the game open. Julius Nattinen put the puck into the back of the net just 54 seconds after the puck drop. San Antonio answered back with Samuel Blais’ fourth goal of the year at 10:37.  Kevin Roy, Sam Carrick, and Deven Sideroff all collected goals in the final 10 minutes to put the Gulls up 4-1 going into the second period.

San Diego scored the lone goal of the middle frame off a 5-on-3 power play chance with Andy Welinski collecting the tally, extending the Gulls’ lead to four going into the final 20 minutes.

The third period saw San Antonio cut into the deficit with two goals. Joe Cannata began the period as Eric Veilleux made a switch between periods. The Rampage answered back when Felix Girard tipped home a Chris Butler shot to cut the San Diego lead to three. After pulling Cannata, Brady Shaw collected his first goal and capped off the scoring at 5-3.

  • Three Stars:
  1. Kevin Roy (SD): 1 goal, 2 assists
  2. Deven Sideroff (SD): 1 goal
  3. Samuel Blais (SA): 1 goal

Up next: The Rampage are now 6-2-0-0 (12 points) on the season and will open up a five game road trip when they return to the ice next Thursday against the Iowa Wild at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center.
