The San Antonio Rampage got their first win of the 2016-17 season by topping their in-state rival Texas Stars 4-2 in front of 3,139 fans at the H-E-B Center on Tuesday evening.
San Antonio got the scoring started just 5:48 into the period when Chris Bigras notched his first goal of the season, beating Maxime Legace for a power play tally. Texas responded later in the frame with a Mattias Backman goal, but the Rampage answered three minutes later with a Garry Nunn goal to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Rampage added to their lead in the third period with Sam Jardine’s first of the season, making it the lone goal of the frame.
Both teams traded goals in the final frame. Texas cut the Rampage lead to one with Matej Stransky’s goal in the final two minutes, but Rocco Grimaldi’s sealed the 4-2 win with an empty net goal.
San Antonio finished 2-for-8 on the power play, while Texas was 0-for-5. Jeremy Smith left the game with injury after the first period and Spencer Martin filled in for the final two frames.
Up next: The 1-4-0-0 Rampage will continue their road trip in Cleveland when they take on the defending champion Monsters at 6 p.m. Thursday evening inside the Quicken Loans Arena.
