The San Antonio Rampage are a work in progress early in the young season. However, they showed a flash of how good they can be with their best offensive game of the young campaign on Saturday.
The Rampage earned a 6-5 win over the San Jose Barracuda in front of 4,623 fans inside the SAP Center for their first win of their extended road trip.
There were four goals scored in the opening frame, with two coming from each team. San Jose lit the lamp less than a minute into the contest with Barclay Goodrow’s tally, beating San Antonio netminder Spencer Martin. The Rampage responded with Joe Whitney’s power play goal over seven minutes later. Rocco Grimaldi gave the Silver and Black the lead, but Nikita Jevpalovs tied things up with a late goal, making it 2-2 after 20 minutes.
San Antonio regained the lead with A.J. Greer’s power play goal just over a minute into the middle frame. The Barracuda tied things up with Nikolay Goldobin’s tally over three minutes later. Another three minutes past and saw San Jose take the lead thanks to Ryan Carpenter’s goal at 7:24. J.T. Compher’s goal would tie things up once again going into the final period of play.
The Rampage took the lead for goal with back-to-back goals to open the third period. Joe Whitney and Gabriel Bourque scored twice in a two minute span to put San Antonio up two. San Jose got one back with Daniel O’Regan’s tally and capped off the scoring to give the Rampage a 6-5 win.
Martin stopped 41-of-46 shots he faced in the win and the Rampage finished 2-for-4 on the power play.
Up next: The Rampage are now 4-6-0-0 (8 points) on the season and will return to the ice tomorrow when they face the Barracuda to close out their weekend series.
