The San Antonio Rampage are playing their best hockey in team history and that continued as they set records with another win. Behind a rookie goaltender and special teams, the Silver and Black continued their winning ways.
The Rampage scored two power play goals in the span of 26 seconds as they defeated the Iowa Wild (21-42-2-2) 4-1 in front of 6,008 fans inside the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon.
John McFarland put the Silver and Black up 1-0 when he put the puck through the legs of Iowa goaltender Johan Gustafsson 12:04 into the opening period. Dany Heatley scored 26 seconds later to give the Rampage a 2-0 lead going into the middle frame.
In the second period, neither team would score as Iowa outshot San Antonio 16-12. The Rampage took their 2-0 lead into the final period of play.
Bobby Butler continued the scoring for San Antonio in the third period. He sent a shot past Gustafsson that rang off the cross bar and into the net. Wade Megan’s short-handed tally at 13:23 put the Rampage up 4-0. Olivier Archambault finally stopped the bleeding as he scored Iowa’s lone goal of the afternoon as the Rampage went on to win 4-1.
The win was San Antonio’s eighth, a new franchise record. The 21 road wins in a season and most wins (11) in a single month were two other franchise records broken on Saturday.
Brittain stopped 30-of-31 shots, earning the second star of the game. Gustafsson made 27-of-31 saves in the loss. San Antonio finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while Iowa was scoreless on six chances on the man advantage.
The Rampage are now 42-20-5-1 (90 points) on the season and will return to the ice on Thursday night when they welcome the Adirondack Flames to the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
