Highlights:
AT&T Center – What a difference 36 hours make. After not playing up to their standards on Sunday night, the San Antonio Rampage came out firing as they swept their in-state rivals in the process.
The Rampage scored early and often en route to a 5-2 win over the Texas Stars in front of 5,617 at the AT&T Center on Tuesday morning in their annual Cool School Day game.
San Antonio got on the scoreboard first just like they have done much of the season. Duncan Siemens beat Texas netminder Jack Campbell at 14:22 of the opening period to give the Rampage the 1-0 lead going into the middle frame.
The Silver and Black would light the lamp four times in the second period to take a five goal advantage. First, Andrew Agozzino sent a wrist shot past Campbell at 4:32 to give the Rampage a 2-0 lead. Michael Schumacher and Marc-Andre Cliche scored 20 seconds apart to make it a four goal game just over five minutes later. Reid Petryk capped off the scoring for San Antonio with a shorthanded goal at 18:02, giving San Antonio a 5-0 lead going into the final period.
The Stars would pull Campbell and replace him with John Muse in net. Texas finally cracked the scoreboard when Devin Shore put home a power play goal at 1:13 of the third period. The Stars added a Matt Mangene goal seven minutes later as Muse stopped the two shots he faced as the Rampage earned a 5-2 win.
“I like the way we played for about two and a half periods,” San Antonio Head Coach Dean Chynoweth said. “We’ve had some great contributions from different guys early in the season. A guy like Ben Street, Joey Hishon…great goaltending from Calvin [Pickard], its a great combination we have.”
San Antonio outshot Texas 29-24 for game, including 15-7 in the second period. The Silver and Black finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while limiting the Stars to 1-for-6 on the man advantage.
“It was a good two periods for us,” Rampage forward Mikko Rantenan said. “Then we were up 5-0 in the third [period] and we let up when Texas scored two goals. We regrouped after the timeout. We’re very happy with the result.”
Spencer Martin finished the game with 22 saves on 24 Texas shots, while Campbell stopped 22 of the 27 San Antonio shots he faced.
The Rampage are now 9-1-4-0 (22 points) on the season and will return to the ice on Friday when they welcome the Ontario Reign to the AT&T Center at 7:30 p.m.
