Rampage lose OT heatbreaker to Heat, snapping home win streak

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Rampage saw their 12-game home winning streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion as they fell 4-3 in overtime to the Stockton Heat (18-20-5) in front of 5,717 fans at the AT&T Center on Saturday night.

The loss is the first for San Antonio at home since a 7-3 loss to the Texas Stars on November 25. The Rampage had the lead two separate times during the third period but could not come up with the victory.

“I’m not happy with the end result,” Rampage coach Drew Bannister said. “We did some good things but we did some things that cost us the hockey game.”

After a scoreless first period, Stockton would get on the board first in the second. Kerby Rychel scored his first of two goals in the game as he banged home a rebound home at 2:11 but San Antonio answered back as Jordan Kyrou scored his 12th goal of the season to make it 1-1 after 40 minutes.

The third period saw a furious battle as the game was tied up by the Heat two different times. First, Ryan Olsen gave the Rampage the lead by sliding puck up under the crossbar as he went into the boards but Stockton’s Andrew Mangiapane tied with a goal from the slot. Sam Blais gave the Silver and Black the lead right back as he beat Gillies from the left circle but the Heat forced overtime with Buddy Robinson’s goal.

In the overtime period, Stockton’s Rinat Valiev sent a no-look pass to Rychel, who put it past Coreau with 0.7 seconds left to lift the Heat to victory.

“The game doesn’t go your way but overall I think we played well,” Blais said. “If we keep working hard and playing like this, I think we’ll be fine.”

The Rampage are now 22-21-2 on the season and will now have a mini break for All-Star Weekend before returning to the ice on Feb. 1 against the Grand Rapids Griffins for “Pink in the Rink” night.
