Rampage hold off Stars in Austin

Katy Red Raiders competed in the 15 and under division at the Texas Showdown National Championship 7on7 14th and 15th in Round Rock.


The San Antonio Rampage edged out the Texas Stars 4-3 in a wild Saturday evening game in front of 6,216 fans inside the Cedar Park Center.

After a scoreless opening period, the lamps were lit in the second. Texas got on the scoreboard first when Stephen Johns banged home a rebound past San Antonio netminder Calvin Pickard to put the home team up a goal. The Rampage responded 37 seconds later when Mikko Rantanen put home his second goal of the season to tie the game.

Rantanen gave the Silver and Black their first lead of the evening after tipping the puck into the open net before Texas goaltender Maxime Lagace. Joey Hishon put home his first goal of the season just before the second period as the Rampage took a 3-1 lead into the final period of play.

Trevor Cheek made it four unanswered goals for San Antonio with his shot off Lagace just over three minutes into the final frame. Texas scored two goals  just over six minutes apart to cut the Rampage lead to one. Jason Dickinson got the first tally and Justin Dowling beat Pickard for a power play tally. However, San Antonio held on for the 4-3 victory.

Pickard finished with a season high 45 saves on 48 Texas shots, while Lagace stopped 17 of 21 San Antonio shots. Texas ended the game 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Rampage were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The Rampage are now 6-0-3-0 (15 points) and will return home to close out their three-in-three weekend against the Chicago Wolves at the AT&T Center at 4 p.m.
