SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Rampage were no match for the defending champion Grand Rapids Griffins (41-25-2-7) as they suffered a 6-2 loss in their penultimate home game in front of 5,121 fans at the AT&T Center on Thursday night.
Grand Rapids took an early lead as they lit the lamp twice in the opening frame. Dominik Shine opened the scoring at 2:48 with a quick shot past Rampage goaltender Ville Husso just 2:48 into the period. Dylan Mcllrath made it a two-goal lead just under 10 minutes later when he beat Husso from the right point.
San Antonio answered back in the second period with Andrew Agozzino’s 23rd goal of the season off a nice feed from Sam Blais at 8:23. It would literally take just one minute for Grand Rapids to answer back when Shine scored his second of the night. Former Rampage center Ben Street burned his old club when he redirected Mcllrath’s shot into the net, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The Griffins added two more goals in the third period from Mcllrath and Filip Hronek and San Antonio finally stopped the bleeding with Austin Poganski’s first goal of the season to finalize the 6-2 final.
The Rampage are now 34-30-10-0 on the season and will return to the ice for their final home game of the 2017-18 season tomorrow night when they welcome the Texas Stars to the AT&T Center at 7:30 p.m.
