Rampage fall short in Toronto

Alex Petrovic (#3, San Antonio) had an assist in the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Friday night.

The San Antonio Rampage had a offensive show in the second period of Thursday’s 8-4 win over the Utica Comets. However, it seemed they used all their offensive firepower the night before as they had a very difficult time finding the back of the net the very next night.

Garrett Wilson tallied his 12th goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Rampage suffered a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Marlies (14-15-5-0, 33 points) in front of 3,126 fans inside Ricoh Coliseum on Friday night.

Toronto would light the lamp first while on the power play. Matt Frattin put the puck past San Antonio goaltender Michael Houser to put the Marlies up 1-0 at the 16:43 mark of the opening period. Former Rampage forward Byron Froese assisted on the goal and it would stand as the only tally going into the second period.

The Marlies extended their lead to two goals when Frattin put home a rebound for his second goal of the evening at 6:39. Drew Shore put the Rampage on the scoreboard with a power play tally off the broken stick of Rocco Grimaldi just over two minutes later.

Ryan Rupert gave Toronto their two goal lead back as he slipped the puck past Houser’s glove to put the Marlies up 3-1 going into the third and final period of play.

In the third period, with time running out and San Antonio on the power play, Houser was pulled for an extra attacker. Garrett Wilson scored off a backhand shot late as the puck went past Toronto netminder Christopher Gibson to bring the Silver and Black within one. Time would run out as the Marlies sealed the 3-2 win.

Houser finished with 16 saves on 19 Toronto shots, while Gibson made 21 of 23 stops. The Marlies finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while San Antonio was 2-for-9 with the man advantage.

The Rampage are now 18-11-3-0 (39 points) on the season and will return to the ice tomorrow to close the quick two-game series with the Marlies at 2 p.m. inside Ricoh Coliseum.
