A weekend series featuring the top two teams in the AHL began with a thrilling overtime win. Both teams colors may be silver and black, but the team from Texas came out on top in round one.

Ben Street tallied the game-winning goal with 47.1 seconds as the San Antonio Rampage defeated the Ontario Reign 3-2 in front of 6,959 fans inside Citizens Business Bank Arena on Friday night.

The teams were scoreless after the opening frame as each team had their changes stopped by the goaltenders, who made 12 saves apiece.

Ontario got on the scoreboard first in the middle frame after a San Antonio turnover. Nic Dowd fired a shot past San Antonio netminder Calvin Pickard just over nine minutes into the second period to give the Reign the 1-0 lead. Zach Redmond beat Reign goaltender Peter Budaj with a low shot at 13:43 to tie the game 1-1 going into the final period of play.

The Rampage took a one goal lead when Colin Smith put the biscuit past Budaj nine minutes into the final period to give the Silver and Black the 2-1 lead. However, Ontario struck in the final moments of regulation as Justin Auger beat Pickard to knot the game at 2-2 and force overtime.

In the extra frame, it was a back and forth affair as both teams had scoring chances. In the final moments of overtime, Street slid the puck between Budaj’s legs for the game-winning goal.

Pickard made 35 saves on 37 Ontario shots. San Antonio finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Ontario was 1-for-4 with the man advantage as well.

The Rampage are now 4-0-1-0 (9 points) on the season and will return to the ice later today to face the Reign to close out their two-game weekend series.
